Bronze statue of an African woman with headdress, made in Burkina Faso. The statue i very skillfully made. The curves of the woman are visible under the clothing. Jet is a uniquely made according to the "Lost Wax" method and has a turquoise green matt patina.

The art of bronze casting is not taught at a school, but the craft is passed on - usually within a family - from master to pupil. These are mainly male bronze casters belonging to the Djermée tribe.
The sculptures are made according to the so-called "lost wax" technique. The original statue is made of wax, which is covered with clay. The clay is then baked so that the wax melts and drips out of the form. In this way the mould is created for the statue, which is then filled with bronze. The resulting statue is partly matinated with copper oxide to create the beautiful colour.
The makers of these sculptures are affiliated with Coöperatie Ouagadougou. A collective of different craftsmen to offer a wide range of craftsmenship for the local, national and international market. Craftsmanship is the answer in a society where there is little industrial development and where unemployment is high.
Burkina Faso means literally 'the land of sincere people' and ies partly in the Sahara strip and 17 million people live there.
The Cooperative supports the craftsmen with their marketing and stimulates them to innovate, improve quality and cooperate with each other. Of course based on the FairTrade principles.
Through cooperation with Tahoua Import the producers are stimulated and motivated to new ideas and products.
