Background information
Bronze has been cast for centuries in Burkina Faso; it is an old, traditional and important craft.
The art of bronze casting is not taught in a school, but the craft is - usually within a family - passed on from teacher to student. It mainly concerns male bronze founders belonging to the Djermée tribe.
Unique bronze sculptures
Each sculpture is made using the so-called "lost wax" technique, in which the original sculpture is made of wax, which is covered with clay, the clay is then fired, causing the wax to melt and drip from the mold. the mold for the image, which is then filled with the source. The resulting image is partly matted with copper oxide, creating the beautiful color.
Fair Trade
Behind your beautiful new acquisition is a good cause! The bronze artists are members of the Ouagadougou Cooperative, which brings together various crafts to make products for, among others, the international market. The cooperative combines arts and crafts and stimulates cooperation, innovation and quality improvement. One of the ways they do this is by working together with Tahoua, which buys the works of art according to the Fair Trade principle. This is much needed in a society where there is little industrial development and where there is high unemployment. This gives the artisans and their families in Burkina Faso a better life. Burkina Faso (literally translated: 'the land of the sincere people') is partly situated in the Sahara strip and is 7 times larger than the Netherlands. Approximately 17 million people live there.
