Background information Le Jardin de Monet, les Iris (1900)
In 1883 Monet rented a country residence in Giverny, a small town between Paris and Rouen. He was so enchanted by the house that he later bought it and spent the rest of his life there. He spent a great deal of time working in his garden which he referred to as his greatest masterpiece. He had his famous 'Japanese pond with water lilies' constructed there and weeping willows and numerous fleur-de-lis planted. Here he made his painting Les Iris.
