Background information Venetian masks
From its origins in the 12th century, becoming unrecognizable by wearing a mask has been characteristic of the Venetian carnival. In class-conscious Venice, the celebration developed into a social satire, where descent played no role for a while. The makers of the masks, the mascherari, had their own guild.
The citizens of Venice were allowed to wear masks for almost three months of the year, from the feast of St. Stephen on Dec. 26, to the last day of Carnival.
